2. Old Tōkaidō – Hakone Hachiri (Hakone)

  • Distance & Time: 3 km (2 miles), 1½–2 hours

  • Highlights: Edo-period trail, historic post stations, cedar wood path, Lake Ashi views

  • Tips: Wear non-slip shoes; best to hike early or stay overnight to enjoy hot springs

  • Recommended Route: Amazake Teahouse → Hakone Hachiri → Hakone Checkpoint → Lake Ashi boat ride


3. Fushimi Inari Hiking Route (Kyoto)

  • Distance & Time: 4–5 km (2–3 miles), 3–4 hours

  • Highlights: Thousands of red torii gates, forest paths, tea houses

  • Tips: Visit early or late to avoid crowds; hike off the main path for a quieter experience


4. Nakasendo Trail – Magome to Tsumago

  • Distance & Time: 8 km (5 miles), 2½–3 hours

  • Highlights: Edo-period rural villages, cedar forests, streams

  • Best Season: May–June, early September–October

  • Notes: Winter hiking not recommended due to snow


5. Mount Koya Hiking Route (Wakayama Prefecture)

  • Tips: Start from Toyama side for first-timers; Nagano side for less crowded experience

10. Hakuba Mountain Trail (Nagano Prefecture)

  • Distance & Time: 20 km (12 miles), 11½ hours, 2 days/1 night

  • Highlights: Hakuba Great Snow Stream, alpine flora, Northern Alps views

  • Tips: Anti-slip spikes required; overnight stay at Hakuba Mountain Lodge recommended


11. Shikoku 88 Temples Pilgrimage (Shikoku)

  • Distance & Time: 55 km segment (Tokushima Prefecture), 3 days

  • Highlights: Buddhist temples, traditional architecture, cultural immersion

  • Tips: Visit “Hoshin Dojo” segment for 2-day experience; ring bells, offer incense, collect temple seals


12. Daisetsuzan National Park (Hokkaido)
