Overview of Mount Koya

  • Location: Wakayama Prefecture, 70 km (43 mi) south of Osaka

  • Significance: Center of Shingon Buddhism, home to over 100 temples; UNESCO World Heritage Site (2004)

  • Best Time to Visit: Early autumn (mid-Oct to early Nov) for autumn leaves; spring (Apr–May) is also pleasant

  • Recommended Duration: 2 days (1 night) for temple stay; day trips are possible but tight

  • Evening: Night tour of Okunoin (~7–9 PM)

Day 2:

  • Participate in morning temple rituals

  • Explore Okunoin, meditation, chanting, sutra copying

  • Return to Osaka/Kyoto after lunch

Getting There

From Osaka

  • Nankai Koya Line Limited Express to Gokurakubashi (1 hr 40 min) → Koyasan Cable Car (5 min)

From Kyoto

  • JR to Shin-Osaka → Subway to Namba → Nankai Koya Line → Cable Car

  • Alternatively, direct bus Apr–Nov (~2 hr 40 min, ¥2,800–5,500 round trip)

From Tokyo

  • Shinkansen Tokyo → Shin-Osaka (2½ hr) → Nankai Koya Line + Cable Car (1 hr 40 min)

  • Total travel: ~4½–5 hrs, ~¥15,450 ($103)


Getting Around Koyasan

  • Most attractions within 30 min walking distance

  • Optional all-day bus pass: ~¥1,100 (~$7)


Food & Dining

  • Shojin Ryori: Traditional Buddhist vegetarian meals at temples

  • Other options for non-vegetarians:

    • Hanabishi: Historic multi-course Zen cuisine

    • Tonkatsu-tei: Fried meats, fish, curry
