Geisha

Geisha in Japan – How to Meet a Real Geisha

Geishas are highly skilled entertainers in Japan, renowned for their artistry, elegance, and unique appearance. Meeting a geisha is an intimate cultural experience that gives insight into centuries-old traditions.

History of Geishas

  • Origins: Descended from saburuko (serving girls) in the 7th century.

  • Development: Flourished in Kyoto during the 18th century, evolving from courtesans to professional entertainers.

  • Shift in role: By the 1770s, geishas stopped offering sexual services and focused on arts, music, dance, and conversation.

Appearance of Geishas

  • Make-up: White face, red lips, black and red accents around the eyes. Modern white powder is rice-based.

  • Hairstyles:

    • Shimada: Traditional chignon; variations indicate age and experience.

    • Taka shimada: High bun for young women.

    • Tsubushishimada: Flattened bun for older geishas.

  • Kimono: Apprentices wear colorful kimonos; older geishas wear subdued tones, with seasonal variations.

  • Footwear: Raised wooden sandals (geta).

Skills and Performances

  • Traditional arts: Dance (from noh and kabuki), shamisen (3-string instrument), ko-tsuzumi drum, tea ceremony, poetry, and painting.

  • Public performances:

    • Odori (dance performances): Mostly in Kyoto during spring, tickets ~3000 yen.

    • Tea ceremonies: Example: Kamishichiken in February, serving tea to thousands.

  • Private performances: Some experiences allow intimate gatherings with a maiko serving tea or performing.

Misconceptions About Geishas

  • Geishas are not prostitutes; their role is to entertain through arts, conversation, and charm.

  • They may flirt subtly, but physical relationships are not part of their professional duties.

  • Marrying a client means retirement from the profession.

Training and Life of a Geisha

  • Apprenticeship begins young:

    • Minarai: Observe and learn etiquette, conversation, and social skills.

    • Maiko: Full training in dance, music, tea ceremony, and hosting; lasts 5 years.

  • Promotion: Around age 20–21, a maiko becomes a full geisha.

  • Modern geishas: Training may start later (~15 years), and some skip traditional okiya (geisha house) training.

  • Society: Women-led, economically independent, and culturally autonomous.

Experiencing Geishas as a Tourist

1. Afternoon tea with a geisha

  • Private walk through geisha districts in Kyoto.
